The port and industrial estate in Moerdijk was developed in the sixties. At that time, the Biesbosch storage reservoirs were constructed.
The water collected went to industry in the Botlek and to the drinking water company in Rotterdam. The sand excavated from the Biesbosch was used for the construction of a new port and industrial estate between Moerdijk and Klundert. Municipalities in the region wanted to create extra work opportunities for young people in the region. The Port and industrial estate grew rapidly. After just over a half century there is now a thriving port of certain stature situated on the Hollandsch Diep.
