The smart choice in the Rotterdam area

Dredging spoil depot

Moreover, RWS is seizing upon the construction of the depot to make the nearby Sassenplaat into a fully-fledged nature reserve. The clean soil that will be freed during the construction of the depot will be used to clean up the deeper parts of the Hollandsch Diep West.
The soil is deposited on the polluted ground as a layer suitable for plant life.

The new depot in the Hollandsch Diep has the form of a large oval pit with a dike around it. Hidden under the water, mud will be stored here starting in 2008. After approximately 18 years the depot will be full. The repository will then be covered with a layer of soil and nature will have a chance to colonise the surrounding area.
So that the depot will fit in with its surroundings, an environmentally-friendly embankment will be built during the construction phase. On the south-western side of the pit there will be a facilities area with a working harbour: vessels will be able discharge their dredging spoil from the harbour. Via a pipeline system, the spoil subsequently ends up in the pit either directly or via the sand separation plant.

The selected location offers sufficient space to accommodate the depot safely.

Due to its location near the Moerdijk industrial complex moreover, there will be hardly any disturbance to nature and recreation.

During the construction period, which will continue until the beginning of 2008, the inhabitants and others involved can also expect progress reports on these activities.

This will take place both via the information magazine Speciaal and via www.baggerspeciedepot.nl

Public visiting days will be organised every year.

If you have any questions about the dredging spoil depot or you would like to receive the information magazine you can make this known to RWS, Zuid-Holland Directorate, marked for the attention of mrs S. Overdijk, Freepost number 5537, 3000 VB Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
